Three different permit paths

Calabasas is its own city with its own Building and Safety department. Hidden Hills is a separate, gated city with its own permitting, and the community has its own architectural review. Some nearby addresses with a Calabasas mailing address are actually in unincorporated Los Angeles County, which means County permits.

Knowing which applies to your address is the first step. We confirm it before design starts, so the plans go to the right agency and meet the right standards.

Fire zones and hillside lots

Much of the hillside land around Calabasas is in a fire hazard severity zone. New construction and major remodels there generally have to meet California’s wildland-urban interface standards: Class A roofing, ember-resistant vents, ignition-resistant exterior materials, and tempered multi-pane windows.

Sloped lots can also need soils reports, retaining walls, and grading review. We plan for those from the first site visit.

How we work

We walk the site, write down what is in the job, and give you drawings, a schedule, and a clear price before anyone starts. During construction you get one crew, weekly updates and photos, and a written yes before any change. At the end there is a walkthrough and a punch list, and we stand behind the work.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in Calabasas and Hidden Hills?

Yes. SAS Builds has completed a full renovation in Hidden Hills and takes on custom homes, renovations, and additions across Calabasas and the surrounding area. We are a licensed California general contractor (License #1073990).

Who issues building permits in Calabasas?

The City of Calabasas has its own Building and Safety department. Hidden Hills is a separate city with its own permitting and community architectural review. Some addresses with a Calabasas mailing address are in unincorporated Los Angeles County and use County permits.

Does Hidden Hills have design review?

Yes. Hidden Hills is a gated community, and exterior changes generally go through the community’s architectural review in addition to city permits. We plan the schedule around that review.

How long does a whole-home renovation take?

A whole-home gut renovation typically takes 9 to 16 months of construction, plus design and permitting beforehand. Design review in gated communities and hillside requirements can add time to the early phases.
